Devika Dass is a new brand stocked at Feather’s boutique, so we thought we would introduce you all to it and the ethical production of Devika Dass’s knitwear. Below includes an interview and a short bio/ethos on the brand…..

Devika Dass

“The idea for the business came from a trip in 2012 to South America, finding a knitting circle of incredible women in a remote part of Peru, who were literally knitting to survive. I was amazed by them: their skills and as women trying to preserve this ancient Andean tradition. It was from here that it all began and I started to develop some swatches with these women.”

Devika says “ I remember looking for an opportunity, I wanted something that would work both creatively and financially, but also be in a position to be able to give something back; I didn’t want the circle to end with me. I wanted to be in a cyclical chain where I knew where I was giving back and to whom. The women I met in a remote part of Peru seemed to fit the idea of what I had been looking for. There were no factories or machines, just collectives of women in these incredible hats and their 20 layers of petticoats knitting together, some with their children.”

For Devika Dass’s own line she wanted to go back to organic and traditional production practices. Centuries ago the Inca’s didn’t write their stories, they told their stories by tying pieces of wool. Working in these ways these women were similarly telling their stories through their knitting. “I was overwhelmed by the way the women worked and the quality of their hand knitting, I immediately put some samples into work with them.

Devika Dass wanted to re-create the connectivity she saw between the women and their work. She wanted her wearers to experience connectivity with her knitwear, whether it is aesthetically through the story or sensually through the feel of the garment. She has described an intimate relationship with her pieces of knitwear. “For me knitwear has been something which has always felt safe, cosy and slightly cocooning; almost a return to the womb. Out of anything else in my closest it was my pieces of knitwear that I had the most intimate relationship with, because of the feelings they would invoke just simply by wearing them. This was the idea behind the souring of the yarns, I had to find something very precious to invoke the wearer in this way.”

A stylistic approach to a new line of luxury knitwear for women with a focus on the philosophy behind how each garment is produced, which Devika sees as being integral to the experience of designer, producer, garment and wearer. Turning away from typical mass manufacturing techniques and channels. Devika works with only the most skilled local Peruvian craftspeople in traditional knit techniques, together celebrating the idea of artisanal skill and creating extraordinary pieces. It was through the stories of these incredible women knitting the first samples that gave birth to Devika Dass.

Petri Dishes by Klari Reis

After the last few weeks of fashion shows, we thought we would take a little break and divert our attention to some art for a change of cultural perspective. Today we came across these amazing paintings by Klari Reis, who fuses art and science to create colourful kaleidoscope master pieces based on petri dishes. Reis uses a UV resistant plastic-epoxy polymer which she injects with brightly coloured powders, oils, acrylics, and industrial dyes. Each day, she releases a new petri dish making no two the same. We think these could be the next inspiration for Mary Katrantzou’s prints, what do you think?….. Who knew science could be so beautiful!

Yesterday Rick Owen’s put on quite the show at Paris Fashion Week, bringing a bit of American Culture to the people of Paris. The designer had his collection on a troupe of dancers and created a stand out performance of stepping, along with the traditional ‘grit face’ expressions. Check out some of the photos taken my our Feather’s team, who were at the show and ultimately wowed them! We also have included a video to give you an insight into the extravaganza, as well as an interview from one of the dancers, taken from the blog ‘In The Gloss’! Interview with LeeAnet Noble – Dancer

“I have been stepping for most of my life—I was in the show Stomp on Broadway and I had done a show before with one of Rick [Owens]’s producers. Rick had seen some videos online of sorority stepping. Women steppers are hard. When they came out with stepping in sororities, they embodied the intensity and togetherness that the men’s groups had previously shown, the sisterhood. And when Rick saw the clips, he thought that their intensity embodied the vicious pieces, strong materials, and colors in his collection.

I’d heard of Rick Owens through hip hop songs, in lyrics where guys rap about him, but when they called me in New York about the idea, I did some research and basically screamed, ‘Oh my goodness!’ They said they needed 40 women steppers, so I called everyone I knew that would be great for this project, and a lot of them didn’t believe me at first. The idea was to bring stepping—something that has roots at colleges and in the streets—to a new level of high art.

The clothes are comfortable, so I love them. I’m always dancing, and I’m also a drummer—I need things that I can move in! I don’t walk around in high heels and tight skirts. [Laughs]. What we wore for the show is perfect for me.

I also never wear makeup unless I’m doing a show. I like to go natural, and use simple cleansers. I especially like the Bioré masks. When I do wear makeup, I love CoverGirl’s Queen collection by Queen Latifah. The colors are great and still natural.

If everyone’s wearing one thing, I like to change it up a little bit by turning something sideways, adding a funky bracelet, or ripping something, so I just touch the trend.”

Milan Fashion Week Report

Milan Fashion Week was light hearted and full of life, experimenting with print, introducing a sense of fun with collections like Moschino celebrating their 30th birthday and making a visual impact. Here are some of our favourites from the week…. Click here to shop our Italian brandsJil Sander

Jil Sander stuck to her signature clean look, but even she could not help a splash of print and risqué cuts, revealing midriffs and low necklines. It was a fresh and simple collection, where pieces could easily be mix and matched to create a contemporary wardrobe for day to evening.Moschino

Moschino had fun, fun, fun with a sense of dressing up by being nostalgic and celebrating previous collections. This season reflected the tongue ‘n’ cheek mood of the brand and kept the monochrome theme with a flash of red. A combination of ladylike day dresses and corsets with chain detailing on hot pants epitomised the saint and sinner aesthetic of Moschino.antonio marras

Antonio Marras SS14 was like a hand drawn picture book played out on models with beautiful illustrations appliquéd on to sheer silks, embroidered flowers on pencil skirts and cargo jackets, and pictorials of landscapes printed on shirts. It was striking with a black and off white palette, but softened with pale pinks and greens which provided a sense of elegance to a childlike demeanour.

EtroEtro layered upon layer paisley and embraced what the brand does best… print! The silhouettes look liked they had been pieced together with scarves to create this slouchy, exotic traveller look. Majority of the collection was toned down with pastel shades but it did incorporate the occasional punch of reds and aquas for those who want to make a statement!

London Fashion Week Report

, , , , , ,

London Fashion Week has come to a close, and without fail it has produced some amazing collections from our British based designers. So with this in mind we have included some of our favourite shows that we went to see in the last few days…..

RoksandaIlincic

Roksanda Ilincic was fresh and bold in an array of citrus colours. It made a strong statement with colour blocking throughout in various stripes, geometric prints and had a very linear aesthetic. She also played with proportions, creating oversized jackets with rounded shoulders against nipped in waists on A -Line skirts and straight leg cigarette pants.

MaryKatrantzouMary Katrantzou stayed true to the brand with a mix and match of prints, based on shoes and combined with florals. The deep colour palette of aqua, turquoise, burgundy and fuchsia print was displayed on voluminous baby doll dresses, leggings and waistcoats, with amazing detailing of girly ruffles and intricate embellishment.PeterPilottoPeter Pilotto based their collection on L.A.-based artist Ken Price, who produces ceramics. Price plays with a sense of depth by using various dappled glazes. In doing so the duo have created a combination of vibrate textured prints and colour fusions for a truly stimulating collection. Sharp lines and panelling form a deeper perspective and by incorporating hoop skirt infrastructures plays with the proportions.JWAndersonJ. W Anderson continues his theme from last season with similar detailing of ties, bows, and layered panels but takes it one step further with transparent PVC, fringing and embossed leathers to develop his look further. Keeping the colour palette simple with monochrome, and occasionally throwing in a colour to freshen the collection for SS14.
